Transparency & Media Responsibility at Emergency Response Watch
We’ve received questions about why certain details are not always included in our posts, ranging from off-the-scanner updates to formal media releases. We want to clearly explain how and why information is shared the way it is.
Why we limit certain details:
• Addresses: Exact addresses are typically not published. When location context is necessary, we reference a general area (for example, the 1300 block of Example Street). Many incidents occur near or at private residences, and publishing full addresses can create privacy, safety, or misuse concerns unrelated to the incident itself.
• Names: Names are not included during active or unfolding calls. Names are only published when they are officially released through a public media release, most commonly from the Ontario Provincial Police, or when an individual has explicitly provided permission and requested media coverage.
• Publication bans: Publication bans may apply under Canadian law, meaning media outlets are legally prohibited from releasing certain information. These bans are commonly used to:
- Protect young persons under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA)
- Protect victims and/or witnesses
- Preserve the integrity of ongoing investigations and court proceedings
• Ongoing investigations: Information may be limited or withheld while investigations are active. Details can change rapidly, and premature reporting risks spreading misinformation or interfering with investigative processes.
Key laws and standards Ontario media must follow:
• Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA): Prohibits identifying young persons involved in criminal matters.
• Criminal Code of Canada – Publication Bans: Courts may restrict what information can be published.
• Defamation Law: Media outlets must avoid publishing unverified, misleading, or false information that could harm an individual’s reputation.
• Presumption of Innocence: Individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Accuracy, updates, and corrections:
Emergency Response Watch prioritizes accuracy over speed. Initial information may be limited, and updates are issued as facts are confirmed through official sources. If an error is identified, corrections are made transparently and promptly.
Our commitment:
Our goal is to keep the public informed without compromising safety, privacy, legal obligations, or investigative integrity. Responsible reporting helps maintain trust with our audience and with the emergency services we monitor and communicate with regularly.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
